#InPoetryMode – Connected At The Root

For Day 3 of the Writer’s Digest 2023 April Poem-A-Day Challenge, the writing prompt is to write a connection poem. This was SUPER fun. So much so, I may write another poem for the heck of it. For this poem, I may do something more with it. It’s a meaningful piece, in more ways than one.

Connected At The Root

Staring at this proverbial tree,
trying to make sense of its existence
and determine how it accomplished survival –
It’s the great mystery that, until now, they had yet to solve.

They were too far away.
Gone for too long.
But in spite of those truths
the tree still stands
in all its glory.
Confirmation that a supernatural power
is the reason for its being.

She, at tip of the highest leaf;
He, at the base of this tall tree.
Separated so far and for so long –
Yet, when the cool morning dew rests on her,  he feels it as if he was the leaf next to her.
And when he absorbs the nourishment of the earth,
It’s as if she’s snuggled by his side absorbing the same strength.

How can this STILL be?

As he grows, so does she.
As she feels, so does he.
This tree, a symbol of their love for each other,
continues to grow –
It’s because its life isn’t close to being over.
It’s because their story remains unfinished.

Time and experience has proven
this bond to be ever-growing
and everlasting,
because they are now
and have always been
connected at the root.
